I saw a blog post the other day which said that something like 67% of gamers were female. That was a very surprising number but I reckon your 38% is more on the money. 67% doesn’t seem realistic.

67 % would be too much.We all know that men are ruling the game world but women are catching up fast with them.
If you look back, there weren’t many women playing but since 360 ,many joined and they actually like it.
I’ve seen some women on the Xbox live with a very high score.

My observation on video game ratings system.
From various recent postings and media articles it would seem parents of children now reaching teenage years still think of video games as just that, ‘games’. I wonder how many of those parents would stop their kids from watching an R rated movie but don’t realise they are letting their kids play games with R rated content. It will be interesting to see how the age statistics shift as the next generation become parents since they will be much more familiar with the content of modern video games.
I was at a birthday for a twelve year old not long ago where the birthday entertainment was provided using a network of gaming PCs. The kids and adults had a great time. However at times I felt a little uncomfortable watching children of that age playing games simulating terrorists versus special forces, especially when the hearing children saying ‘let’s play as the terrorists”.
I have no problem with the subject matter of video games, same as I have no problem with cinema content. If you’re old enough to understand it you should be allowed to view whatever you want. But the very nature of video games seems to mean that many parents still don’t take the ratings system as seriously as they would the ratings system for cinema. I wonder if the age shift of video gamers to 20s and 30s could be due to this age group having more disposable income to afford modern titles, than say a teenager at school or college.

I do not dispute the statistics you posted, but the majority of those on that link are absolutely bogus, paid for by those interests it serves. I can guarantee that the majority of kids do not ask permission to rent or buy video games. I worked at Rogers Video (the Canadian competitor to Blockbuster) and I had to repeatedly inform parents of what their children were renting, not to mention I had to steer hundreds of people under the age of 18 away from renting Mature games and those under the age of 14 from Teen games. This is not the norm. Most clerks at Toys R Us, Best Buy, Blockbuster, Rogers, EB, etc. could care less about what they are selling to kids.
Parents take no responsiblity and neither do retailers. Jack Thompson should be attacking those two parties, not the gaming industry as a whole.

Oh yea, what constitutes as a video game? My mother once said she played video games because she plays solitaire on her computer and attempted Mario Kart 64 a couple times.

Yes Tecz, there are people over 50 playing games.I have few on my friend’s list. One of them is a woman around 57.
Brad,i couldn’t agree more with you. Many parents don’t know what their kids are renting and sometimes the parent doesn’t pay much attention to it because the kid looks happy with what he’s got.
Mosh, times are changed. What more can we say?
