Update January 18:
I have decided to put next to each open source app its portable equivalent, if it has one.
Download more Portable apps from PortableApps.com and PortableFreeware.com
So have another look to the list.
Those were the top most popular open source software in 2006 and some of them will stay popular for the years to come. (File Sharing not included). If you’d like to see some other popular open source software, you can visit OpenSourceWindows.org.

4Hi,
my (automatic) trackback looks a little bit wrong. Better is this version:
“a nice short list without overkill found at carolsvault” or in german “eine kuze Liste der besten Opensource-Programme ”
Can you fix this and when delete this comment, please?
Thank you and best regards from Berlin, Germany

6Hello Klempner,
I’ve never hear of Typo3 so i had to look it up but i sure would like any suggestions regarding popular open source apps.
So shoot if you have others in mind.
If i gather more, then i will re-publish this entry with Extras.
Thank you for the comment.

10Great post. I really like ClamWin. It’s great to have a lightweight AV application for on demand scanning.
-However note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.

Geany is a great Text Editor. Works fantastic under Linux. I tried it once under Windows and I couldn’t install it. So I guess this is a recommendation for all the Linux Users.

15Why, oh why pollute the list with the most annoying new feature in 2007: The “Snap preview”? It’s by far the easiest way to make reading your page a nuisance!

18OSDir.com is hardly a directory of open source software anymore. There has not been added any new software for more than a year - and most of the links there are dead.
Instead check-out Open Source Alternative - they recommend open source applications that are alternatives to well-known commercial products.
