Surviving in the wild - Do you have the skills?
HowTo, Recommended Links, Personal, Links, Security, Blogging December 6th, 2006
The story of James Kim, the Cnet editor who got lost while trying to get help for his family and rescue them, really got me worried.
What I realized is that I don’t know absolutely anything more about surviving in wild, except climbing trees and finding the South.
I keep thinking that getting lost can’t happen to me and probably you think that too.
So I start Stumbling for some survival tips and most important the basic survival skills.
Here is what I found:
5 BASIC SURVIVAL SKILLS by Patrick E. McHugh is the first to start with.
You can find here the entire file library.
OutdoorLife gives you tips that can save your life.Plus a quiz.
I also found the US Army survival (pdf)manual.
SurvivalIq is a great place to find almost everything you need to know,
from survival skills to land navigation.
That’s it for now.
About
Dans brother Daz and myself used to rough it regularly when we used to go climbing and scrambling and it was probably the best time i’ve ever had.Have a look for a bloke called Ray Mears who is a British survival expert who has done about five series on BBC2,he does know his stuff
I will sure look him up.Thanks Dave.
There’s another British man who makes great survival documentaries in jungles and even North Poll.I can’t remember his name though.
That could be Ray Mears you are thinking of,but there is also Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Bruce Parry.Bruce Parry did a programme called Tribe,I can send you a link for that if you want, not sure if the videos will work though.
Ray Mears is the man. He looks like a tubby nondescript English guy, who wouldn’t look out of place mowing the lawn at his suburban semi, but there’s no-one else I’d want to be stranded in the wilderness with. He teaches fire lighting to native tribes, rather than the other way round…
I was talking about Bruce but i know Ray too.I’ve seen some of his programs.
They’re both great.
Thanks for the tips Carol. I’m pretty much in the same position as you, except I haven’t tried my hand at climbing any trees.
Well, I don’t think I will be surving much in the Wild!
Love the new template BTW. I’ve noticed Node thirty three designs popping up everywhere now.
Very nice.
You should try it Ajay.I haven’t done it in a while but i am sure i haven’t lost it.
Just remember,if you’re ever lost in the woods,3 little fires are better than a big one and always have a compass,a lighter and a map with you.
Maybe a screwdriver as well. Just for fun.
Chris,i had to make changes to the original template and remove a part of the header then made some little changes into the css file.
I still want to change the H3 text but ‘ill do it later.
Did you saw other designs than this one?
The main place I’ve seen Node 33s work is here:
http://www.openwebdesign.org/
But I’ve seen a few of their blog templates about as well. Nice, clean-lined work.
Oh!Thanks for the link, Chris.
The original template is a bit too cluttered…but the only one i love so far. With a bit tweaking i will make it even nicer than it already is.
So sad. Makes me think of all the tools we used to have to get our bearings, like compasses - does anyone still know how to read them now we have GPS? I learnt as a child, but somehow it is so easy to forget these things. we never think we’ll get lost in this way. I’d better have a look at those guides..
