Wow, I can’t believe we are third on that list. I heard that we were the fattest country in Europe on the news yesterday and was subsquently gobsmacked. Oh well hopefully this was provoke more people to excerise and live more healthy lifestyles.

Crazy how the US is by far #1. And they act like they have it all together. There’s obviously something seriously wrong. I’m sad my country (Canada) is in there. I wish people would start to understand their addictions to food and start to be proactive. If we work together we could get rid of this problem. One of the main problems is that people trust the food in the grocery store is actually ok for them to eat. Not only does the processed food make you fat, it makes you addicted and causes many other health problems. I know what it’s like to be addicted and to be an emotional eater but once you come out of it you don’t miss it at all!

People are not aware what too much food, epecially junk food does to them till is too late,or till they see it on tv.
And it is the same with the drinks they have, such as cola and others the same.

People are too lazy these days,if people just got up of their backsides and did a bit of exercise it would help them, even if its just going out for a walk.

…or just ignore the junk houses they see around.
I just saw this afternoon on BBC new that almost a quarter of Americans are obese.
    Crazy!

Exercise DEFINATLY has a lot to do with it. But I think food has as much or more to do with it. People are lazy and addicted to processed foods. I’ve actually read from some reliable sources that there are things in processed food especially put there to make you addicted to them. I totally believe that.

The one thing that processed food is full of is salt, thats the big killer. Also if people saw what sort of meat goes into a burger they wouldn’t touch the things.Eat your 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, cook your own food and cut out the salt and you will feel miles better.

Some countries are full of fat bodies. . .others are just full of fat heads. I’m sure most of Europe would be high on a list of the latter.

@ Shiva - I haven’t seen India on that list.
Maybe i should check it again.

@ Phillip- Europe is doing fine in more ways you care to think of. And if you want to look at things like that, then we are fat heads….whatever makes you happy.

These are just statistics listings, that are alarming, but they are not indented to insult.

. . .and I quote, “Crazy how the US is by far #1. And they act like they have it all together.”

It is pathetic how, no matter what the topic, someone somewhere must wedge a U.S. bashing comment into the conversation.

In case you haven’t paid any attention to the American television streaming into Canada. . .all Americans talk about is how obese they are and what to do about it. Name a single program you have seen in which an expert states that the U.S. has no problems in this area.

European nations have numerous difficulties with obesity and poor heart health. These problems are NOT caused by the U.S.. They are most often linked to economic difficulties expanding the lower classes.(no pun intended) There are plenty of people who are fat and happy supping on breads, vegetables, wine and cheese. Don’t fall into the pathetically tired old trap of blaming McDonalds.

By the way, I am writing from Canada as well, and I will be stopping by the Tim’s this morning for my bagel and coffee.

We all have our issues, Phillip.
Let’s not argue about these things and let’s just do a mature talk instead.

Sorry, I call a spade a spade. Not so subtle comments slipped into otherwise normal entries should be addressed every time they are encountered. Just as I wouldn’t let slip by a comment on race or religion, I will not allow someone to fly by with a comment based on national bias. I have nothing against Europeans. I made the comment as a platform to draw attention to the previous statement.

It is fascinating, though, how quickly our minds are drawn towards stereotypical scapegoats when we are faced with a problem. I would assume that it is far easier to do so then to really explore an issue. Saves time, too.

Obesity is a complicated issue. A multitude of factors contribute to the declining health of man as a whole: economic; technological; ethnic; etc.; etc..

Most seem to focus on a few tiny puzzle pieces instead of seeing the broader picture. McDonalds is not the problem; it is a symptom. “The finger that points at the moon is not the moon.”

The current campaigns to shame the overweight into changing their lifestyle will not work as it has done with smoking. In many situations, it will only damage those who are already suffering from this handicap.

Thank you for taking this serious, Phillip.

No one should try shaming the overweight, smokers, etc.

But the way things are put will sound like that, and will be then taken as an insult.
    Feelings are always powerful…..

The point is that obesity is a huge issue, causing heart problems, leading to death, and we should never look away from that.
