The Seven Deadly Sins of (Not) Listening

Sin #1: Filtering. This is when a person’s mind is sifting through another’s words and tuning in only when he or she hears agreement. Commonly, a Filterer replies to someone else’s statements with “yeah, but…”

Sin #2: Second Guessing. Someone who is second guessing usually misses important details because they are too busy (a) imagining someone has hidden motives for saying what they’re saying, and (b) trying to figure out what those hidden motives might be.

Sin #3: Discounting. This sin occurs when a listener lacks respect for a speaker. What the speaker is saying could be 100% dead on correct, but a Discounter will either internally or publicly scoff at what’s being said, for any number of reasons. The sad thing about Discounters is that they often miss the solutions to the problems before them, simply because they don’t like the source…….

I can’t minimize, maximize or close Firefox windows

Today i had the weirdest thing happening with my Firefox.
I was basically unable to maximize or close it, while it was stuck as minimized, unless i did it through the task manager.
Firefox was running but it was invisible.

After backing up, deleting, installing fresh, loading up from backup, deleting localstore.rdf, backing up again and clicking on the bar like never before, i decided to trace back to the last thing i did.
I installed FF in another two folders so i can test any changes i was about to make, and load up for both the same user profile as on the original one.

Tracing back….I installed some new addons and a theme.
But how could i get in there and disable them if i couldn’t maximize the window?

Without any access to it, it appeared to be a bit impossible to get all my stuff back.

Here’s what did it:

I highlighted the stuck firefox, then hit ALT+Space+S.
That gave me a very strange view to the Firefox toolbar, which by the way was enough to get me to the tools and then addons.

Once in there, i disabled the last used theme and activated the default one.
As silly as it sounds, on restart i had no problem whatsoever.
To make sure that the fault was in that theme, i fixed the same way the two other FF’s.
The theme? Aero Silver Fox Basic.

And this was the only thing that could restore my Firefox without losing anything.

If you happen to encounter something like this, just do what i did and it will work.

Balsamiq Mockups: a new AIR tool for fast UI prototyping

In this digital era, anything that can make us more productive is more than welcome.

Last week I gave a try to the .air app “Balsamiq “ and though it’s a paid app, I thought I should post my review about it.

Balsamiq is a mockup and prototyping tool. For those of you working with this type of applications, you know how hard it is to find a good working one or a good priced one.

At first, the app doesn’t look as fancy as we all expect, compared to other .air apps we’ve experienced, but here’s the catch:

Focus on functionality

Balsamiq Mockups intentionally uses hand-drawn UI elements, so that people don’t get attached to “that pretty color gradient”.

As you skip the “looks” and move over to the technical part, you would be surprised to see how good and well made it is .

Equipped with more than 50 controls, Balsamiq gives you the option to start a simple design and end up with some really rich web sites and applications.

Of course, my description about it is not as good as the author’s description, so if you need to see what this app can do,so head over at Balsamiq to get the full description of this app and the download.

Note that:

You can download Mockups for Desktop for FREE. Some of the features of the app, like saving and loading multiple mockups, can only get unlocked using a license key.

To get a license key, you can do one of the following:

  • If your company bought Mockups for Confluence, JIRA or Twiki, ask your IT admin for your company’s license information and use it FREE of charge.
  • If you are a do-gooder of any sort (non-profit, charity, open-source contributor, you get the idea), email me with a short blurb and I’ll send you a license, FREE of charge
  • If you are a blogger / journalist / maven willing to write me up email me a short blurb and I’ll send you a license, FREE of charge
  • If you don’t fit in any of the 3 buckets above, you can buy a single-user license of Mockups for Confluence for $79.
