Disable chkdsk at startup
CHKDSK can be very annoying sometimes,epecially if you are trying to defragment.
So if you’ve got problems with it,here’s what you have to do:
(Windows Xp and 2000)
- Go to Start ,Run and type in regedit.
- Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE , then go to the following subkey:
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager - Change the BootExecute entry to: autocheck autochk *
- Exit your registry.
- Restart.
That should solve it.

checkdsk is totally useless l0l it has never helped me, scandisk yes it fixes few problems like missing links(whatever they call) to restore application to their previous state. checkdsk at every boot is absolutely unnecessary, many of them might agree with me?

Hi Manuel and sorry for the late answer.
My advise to you is to try a repair from CD.
This is mainly an easy operation and it will fix whatever issues you might have.
If you don’t know how to do it, i can point you to a good web site that can help a lot.
Before you proceed with this, please do the following:
Click Start then Run, then type : sfc /scannow and click Ok.
Now, you should be prompted to insert the Windows CD in.
Follow the instructions and when the operation is ready, reboot.
If this isn’t working, then the procedure above will work.

Also I’ve looked in the system32 folder and the AutoChk.exe is showing up. I’ve even over written it using the WinXP CD and still didn’t correct.

I’m having the same problem with a customers computers.
Getting error AutoChk.exe Program not Found.
I booted to safe mode and ran a system restore. After rebooting it Still show that error. But it boots into Windows.
I’ve also tried to locate the BootExecute but is nowhere to be found. This system is running XP Home.

When I navigate to Session Manager, I can not find BootExecute. Where should I look to turn off CHKDSK?

This is the right One.
Go to Start ,Run and type in regedit.
Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE , then go to the following subkey:
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Change the BootExecute entry to: autocheck autochk /kcdef* (Accoriding to your drive letter, how many are there.)
Exit your registry.
Restart.

Hi
Chkdsk runs every time I start my machine.
I have checked the registry setting as you advised.
Any other ideas?

That’s a very interesting one.
Can you install TweakUI and reinable your xp partition with it?
Once installed,open the program and navigate to My Computer/Drives and then mark back the letter of your missing drive.
You can also access it by typing Start/Run—for example, “C:” .
Once you’re in there,you can do what i said above and you’ll have it back.
Do that first and then let me know if it works.
In the mean time i will look for some other info.

I wonder if this could help me with my situation…
I’ve had XP and Vista installed on separate partitions for some time now, but I recently *hid* the XP partition by mistake while using the wrong Partition Magic tool. And I don’t know how to make the partition visible again, especially since Partition Magic won’t run on Vista.
So now every time I try to boot into XP, I get a chkdisk error and the computer reboots itself over and over again. I was wondering if by disabling chkdisk I would actually be able to boot into Windows? If so… does anyone have any idea how to disable chkdisk even though my XP partition is hidden?

Then go and look!Go with your mouse over your hard drive and see how much you’ve got.Look also at your ram memory and then i tell you if you can install Vista.

Ummm..K,where are the photos?
Well,it isn’t the same.The fact that your laptop is slow hasn’t got anything to do with that.
The check disk at statup often happens when a drive is dirty or when there are errors.
Have you tried storing your music on Xdrive from AOL?It’s 5 gb big and it could hold some of your music.Burning them to Dvd will spare you lots of space.
I would suggest getting yourself one of those external hard drives and keep it for music only.
Try uninstalling software you don’t use,remove songs you don’t listen,remove crap and other unecessary files and try defragmenting as often as you can.

I’ve checked my startup disk and it’s all set the same from the steps you mentioned. My laptop gets slower nowadays because I have been uploading lotsa lotsa mp3′s. I might try burning them to DVD’s.
